How to write a deckblatt Letter - 2019 Guide with Examples infographicHow to write a titelseite Letter s infographicA resume without a titelblatt letter is like Lennon without McCartney. It just feels incomplete.Dont know how to write a titelblatt letter? There are thousands like you who are in a similar conundrum who dont know how to write a cover letter.Which is why ur cover letter examples as part of our 2019 Guide to Writing a Cover Letter will ta ke care of all your problems. The Guide will broadly tackle the following areas, with cover letter example in the end to explain how to write a letter. In case you want to directly start off with writing a cover letter of your own, you can check out our infographic below and a cover letter example in the end before getting straight to work. What is a Cover Letter? The most underrated component of the job-hunting process, its apalling how little attention is paid to the humble cover letter.Simply put, a cover letter is a document that you send along with your resume to provide additional information around your skills and experience. When a recruiter is flooded with thousands of applications for a single vacancy, how do you expect him/her to peruse through them all and select the winner?Thats where the cover letter comes in handy. Right out of the way, mora than half of the applicants wont bother to send a cover letter along with their resume. They belong to the category of those exasper ated souls who select multiple job listings and hit send resume. You can imagine what happens to them. They spend their days and nights dazed and confused, wondering what theyre doing wrong.I applied to like a 100 different vacancies man. I dont know whats going on. If this sounds like you or someone you know, read on.Why do you need a cover letter? As you now know, since you are competing with thousands of other equally accomplished (if not more) professionals for a single job, one thing is absolutely clear-You get only a single option to make it.So ask yourself do you want to waste that chance by endlessly sending your resume to 100+ recruiters and then wonder what went wrong, or do you want to play it smart by applying to just 10 but simultenously increase the probability of getting that coveted shortlist?Thats right. The second option.I bet some of you are still wondering that the math doesnt quite makes sense how is applying to 10 places better than applying to a 100?To which, we ask Would you rather eat 5 average burgers that you make you go meh, or would you rather eat a single kickass burger that will make you want to kiss the hand that delivered it from heaven? We thought so too. Cover letters are that missing piece of the equation which makes applying to a few targeted vacancies better than applying for dozens of random ones.Contrary to popular belief, HRs are smart people. Well, lets rephrase that. If you encounter hundreds of resumes on a daily basis for years, you do get to know a little something about them. You figure out how to spot a mildly bad resume from a terribly bad one.Similarly, you can figure out if the candidate actually went through the job vacancy and gave it a thought before sending in their application, or whether your job listing was just one of a few dozen which they checked at once before hitting send. And if you belong to the second category, all the HRs in the world will combo together and hit you with bulky binders till you rush back and fix your job-hunting process. How is a Cover Letter different from a Resume?Isnt your resume enough, you ask? If you spent hours and days working on it, whats so special about that additional piece of document which will increase your chances of getting a shortlist?A resume is a statement of all your work profiles till date. You can rephrase or tailor your professional experience along the lines of a few profiles or industries which you are targeting, but other than that, theres very little that you can do when it comes to customizing your application.Thats where the humble cover letter comes in.The format or structure of a resume is pretty voreingestellt (for more, you can check out our detailed guide on resume layout and resume format). Most applicants who are up-to-date with resume trends will send in their resumes along those lines itself.A cover letter is where you can break free from the rest and showcase how you and you alone can kill it, how you are meant for that pa rticular job role, how you were born to be an Associate at XYZ, for instance.Trust us, we arent being dramatic when we say it. Unless you are able to prove to the recruiter that everything youve ever done till date was only leading to that particular vacancy, everything else is hogwash. And thats where a cover letter breaks away from a resume.Cover letters are written for a particular vacancy and addressed to a specific Hiring Manager/Recruiter. You can scan your entire professional career and cherry pick only those instances and achievements which will present you as a perfect response to the job listing. And theres more. You can do the same for every job that you are applying for. This is how you reduce the number of places where you apply while streamlining your job-hunting process and making your applications more targeted and concise.A cover letter also gives you a chance to explain your case or justify your shortcomings in a way which is not always possible in a resume. For insta nce, in cases where you were off the job market for a particular time period (owing to any reason whatsoever), you can justify the same in your cover letter. In case you are changing industries or starting in another industry from scratch after a significant experience in another wildly divergent segment, you can dispel the ambiguity surrounding your application so as to leave little room for doubt. You can be outrightly honest in your application and explain your motivation so that the recruiter at least has adequate information and has a chance to factor in your perspective before coming to a decision. How to write a Cover Letter - A Crisp 5-step GuideSince you now know what a cover letter is and why you need one, lets get down to the nuts and bolt of making one.Within 10 minutes, the secret to writing a killer cover letter will be revealed to you in a simple step-by-step guide. How to begin - Addressing the cover letterA) Your anthroponym and job title comes on top. The job title is not a sacrosanct rank assigned to you from the heavens above. You have a certain level of flexibility wherein you can tailor the same as per the requirements of the job.For instance, if you are a Sales Executive in your present profile and come across a Sales Associate vacancy, you can go ahead and modify the same to make your application a better fit for the job.B) Unless you are living in Dickensian England, avoid Dear Sir/Madam. Depending on the culture which is prevalent in your targeted company (casual vs. corporate), you can go take a call on whether to use the first name or last, followed by the profile held by that person aligned to the left.Mr. John BuchananHiring Manager, XYZ Ltd.(In case you cant find the name of the Hiring Manager, you can simply proceed with Human Resources, XYZ Ltd.)This goes a long way in making a huge impact than using a generic Sir/madam. This tells the recruiter that what they are about to read is written specifically for them. This will help your cover letter feel like a breath of fresh air for someone who is so used to seeing general cover letters thrown around by the dozen.C) Start off with your contact details aligned to the right, which would typically include your phone number, email and location (no need for the complete address, just the location will do). While we are at it, you wouldnt want to break your chances of getting a shortlist if, for instance, your email id is mrjohnmccoolgmail.com or princesssophiagmail.com...you catch the drift, right? So lets avoid that as well. Ideally your email id should only consist of your first and last name.Additionally, avoid using email-id of your current organization. Thats just disrespecting not only your present employer but also the recruiter whos seeing your cover letter for the first time.D) You can add your digital profiles here as well (only LinkedIn and blog, not your facebook inc or Twitter), but only if you think theyll add value to your application. If your blog is fl ooded with posts on Kim Kardashian and UFO sightings since 1970, keep that **** miles away from your cover letter. Finally, make sure that the contact information is consistent across your resume, cover letter and digital space in general. The first pararaph Hook, Line SinkerThe first paragraph of the cover letter is the hook which is supposed to catch the recruiter and draw them in. The first paragraph will contain within its lines a reason for the recruiter to continue reading. So how do you do that? Whats the secret?Want the Hiring Manager to read your cover letter in its entirety? Give him/her a reason to. The first paragraph is your chance to showcase how the skills and experience that you possess stand to benefit the organization.Try to identify a need which you can fulfill. Thats the basic premise for any transaction since the dawn of mankind. If you cant fulfill a pressing need of the organization, your cover letter will end up in a big ol steaming pile of Nope.Identify someth ing which the organization is looking for, scan your previous achievements and demonstrate how you can leverage that to solve critical organizational issues. Unless you can generate that need, youll always be at the periphery of getting shortlisted but wont ever make the cut.The first line itself can be your gateway to accomplish just that. There wont ever be a single sure-shot way to guarantee a shortlist. You can either highlight your achievements or demonstrate your interest in the organization by researching their requirements and showing how you can fulfill the same.Try to talk less about yourself and more about how your track record will help the organization. Let us make the point even clearer with a few examplesAn 11-year track record of leading teams in Sales and generating multi-million dollar revenues on an annual basis. Played a key role in partnering with MNCs and other conglomerates. Highly interested in the profile of Sales Manager at XYZ Ltd.Now lets take a look at a nother oneAs a keen follower of XYZ Ltd. and its initiatives, I was thrilled to find a vacancy of Sales Manager. With my track record of generating USD 8.2m in sales and forging strategic alliances with Fortune 500 companies, I think Id be a significant value add to your organization so I can play an instrumental role in achieving your target of 20% YOY growth.mic dropleidice the difference between the two? In the second one, not only is the candidate talking about his achievements, shes also mentioning how her previous work experience can help the organization achieve their goals. This is a significant departure from those candidates who select multiple job listings and send their resumes everywhere. This shows that the candidate shortlisted this particular vacancy from several others and conducted research to find the targets which the company is trying to achieve, and how she can play a role in fulfilling those targets. The Second Paragraph - You The CompanyContinue in the same vei n while making sure that the second paragraph is not you just bragging endlessly with your achievements. All your achievements are detailed in your resume - dont worry about that. Here, your goal is to showcase only those achievements which the recruiter or organization can deem to be useful.Another component which we only implied till now but are explicitly mentioning only here is RESEARCH. That can be a huge deal-breaker or a life-saver, depending on which camp you fall under. You cant fulfill the needs of the recruiter if you dont know what it is.For instance, if you are a Software Developer who has overseen several dozen projects across your tenure, youll only highlight those projects - more specifically achievements of those projects - which the organization can find useful. For example, if one of your project was around developing a portal, and as part of your research, you find that the organization youre targeting is somehow targeting just that, you can go ahead and mention the same in glowing letters.Staying relevant is the key. Otherwise youll just look like a braggart whos full of himself. The Third Paragraph - The Company YouYour goal is to convince the recruiter why you want that particular job and how its not just any generic job you are applying for - what is it about that company which makes it a perfect fit for you?The research component that we talked about in the earlier point will reap more dividends here as well. Scan the companys website and make a list of everything which you think might be relevant. The points here will range from the organizations interest in non-core activities (sports, environment, etc.) to strategies around its core initiatives. The idea is to make the recruiter believe that you know everything there is to know about the company and cant wait to be a part of it.You can research and identify any particular project which the company is targeting, or any component of its long-term plan which you think might be relevant for you. Mention that project or component and explain how with a track record like yours, you will be a killer addition to the same.If you genuinely think that youd be a perfect fit for the organization, its only a matter of phrasing it correctly. Believe it or not, even the recruiter is desperately looking for people like you.If the company is actually going to benefit from having you on-board, why wont they? An example will clear that right upIt is difficult to come away un-awed by the passion for excellence that XYZ has displayed in its meteoric rise to become a dominant player in this field. Its remarkable that despite a presence in x states/countries, it values its employees ensures a continuous learning environment. I am inspired by its collaborative working style that emphasizes upon teamwork, trust tolerance. Hence, I consider XYZ to be my most preferred employer.Ending the cover letter - Seal the DealInstead of having a generic last paragraph, you can utlize the space to inc lude additional details which you think will further seal the deal. The idea is to close the cover letter on such a note that the recruiter is left with no option but to contact you and schedule an interview. You can take our advice and avoid using cliche phrases like thank you for your time or looking forward to hearing from you. Even if you are desperate for that job, try to not reflect the same in your cover letter.Dont focus on your requirements. Instead, focus on how you can fulfill theirs. Please find enclosed my CV. Looking forward to hearing from you.Enclosed for your consideration is my CV. Id appreciate the opportunity to further discuss my suitability and qualifications with you on call or in person so I can share my roadmap for reducing your costs by 20%.Cover Letter Tips HacksResearchWe cannot overstress the importance of research in drafting the perfect cover letter.Theres little sense in spending time writing a cover letter and trying to customize it without making sure that you are indeed hitting the mark. Research is how you truly tailor the cover letter in line with a particular profile and organization.Your cover letter should ideally be a response to the Job Description. You should present yourself as someone who can single-handedly resolve all the issues which are outlined in the JD.Look up the Hiring Manager if possible instead of addressing the cover letter to Human Resources. Researching on the specific issues and challenges which the company is facing will help if you want to scan your own achievements and assess how you can truly resolve them.Cover letter formatA precise cover letter format will undoubtedly be a gamechanger for getting those shortlists. The cover letter format includes the structure and design in which you present the document, in addition to the basic information which goes in the same, including your contact details and job title. In most cases, you need not experiment too much with design and structure. In top-end MNC s and official vacancies, the recruiter specifies the exact format in which to deliver the resume and cover letter. Here, be cautious. If the recruiter has asked for a particular format, submitting your application in any other format most often means immediate rejection.CustomizationCustomization is the key to the perfect cover letter. There are no two ways to that.Right from the greeting on the top to the closing paragraph, the cover letter should feel like a response to that particular job vacancy. The research part may seem gruelling to most, but believe us, its worth it. Always.Finding out intricate details of the company and incorporating the same in your cover letter speaks volumes. Even before you appear for the interview, the recruiter will think of you as someone who knows what s/hes doing, someone who has spent time on their application and meticulously tailored it to the job vacancy.Going easy with customization and sending generic cover letters is a sure short recipe fo r disaster. Youd rather not send a cover letter at all than send a general one.Know what to include, and what not toThe cover letter is not a register of all your achievements till date. Thats your resume. Make sure you are not coming across as someone who cant perceive anything outside their own achievements. It doesnt matter to the company if youve been a hero in your last organization. That only says that you did well at your last job. Its your task to convince the recruiter that you have the capability to replicate your successes in their organization as well.Dont include elaborate project details and administrative responsibilities. While theres no universal consensus on the word limit, general wisdom suggests you keep it limited to 350-400 words.Filling resume gapsIn most cases, youll follow a standard format for your resume. Theres little room in there for justifying any shortcomings. Thats where the cover letter comes in.Ranging from employment gaps to too many work profiles in a short span of time, you can use the cover letter to remove ambiguities and ensure that the recruiter does not jump to any conclusion.A resume is your personal statement. Its filled with your details and your achievements. But the same is not the case with a cover letter. Its more about the organization which you are targeting than anything else.Dont lie or go overboardWe felt it was important to state this despite it being something too obvious. Any decent organization knows the value of a good recruit and the cost of a bad one. Theyll go at great lengths to validate each and every little thing youve mentioned in your resume and cover letter.Which is why, dont lie.Not only will it ruin your chances of bagging that particular role, if a company finds out you blatantly lied on your resume/cover letter, theyll spread the same in their network which might include other significant companies and recruitment agencies. In other words, you are a goner.Be humanAll recruiters know that an yone they go on to recruit will spend 8-10 hours in their environment, interact with their teams, coordinate with their clients and what not. In other words, they arent looking for a machine. They are looking for a living and breathing individual wholl be a team player.Gone are the days when you had to be uptight in your tone and language. Dont confuse it with being not professional though. You can be professional without sounding like a robot.Give a snapshot of the individual that breathes beneath the surface. It helps if the recruiter knows that you have a healthy sense of humour or are a perfect fit for the team.Cover Letter ExampleGot more queries around writing your Cover Letter? What the first year back to work is like, according to dads
What the first year back to work is like, according to dadsWhat the first year back to work is like, according to dadsThough there is much literature about the hormonal and emotional changes a woman experiences after giving birth that is warranted and needed - it isnt just females who change when they become a parent. While men are off the hook for carrying and creating a child for nine months, giving birth and breastfeeding, many males struggle to shift to their new role as a father. Not only do they feel immense pressure to provide, but they also must accept their transformation in identity, routine and heart. The first year, while an exciting one, is also ripe with many stressors, arguments with their partner, and the least amount of sleep theyve ever survived on (yep, even during college) Men typically tend to be less likely to discuss their struggles or difficulties, since they feel pressured to remain strong and supportive, even when theyre filled with worry or anxiety.Follow L adders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraBut these male executives and entrepreneurs want to break that stereotype by encouraging their counterparts to speak up, ask for help when they need it and understand that while things cant be how they used to be, they can - and will - be better. In honor of Fathers Day, allow these leaders to make you feel more at ease if youre a new dad - or help you prepare if youre about to be one.It will change many aspects of how you work and perform.Co-founder and managing director of Living DNA, David Nicholson is the proud papa to Clare, a 3-year-old and Orion, a 10-month old. When he returned to work after his first child welches born, he appreciated how his life had changed. And no, not just that he was a dad. Or that he was running on very few Zzzs. But rather, how everything was quite suddenly different. This now means the time I work, how I work, the thi ngs I did in my free time, are no longer just about me and my partner, he continued. What does he mean? His priorities and his choices were altered to put his growing family at the front-and-center, always. There is an impact on work, such as taking a later meeting, picking up that call after dinner or staying up late no longer fit.Let go of control - and have patience.Especially if you consider yourself ambitious, open to risk and excited by outcomes - having a child will shake up your comfort zone in a way you never imagined possible. Luke Peters, the CEO of New Air, and dad to four kiddos, ranging from 2-years to 20-years old, its important to understand that not everything is in your control. That new beautiful baby will have unpredictable needs that will require you to have patience, he continues. You will have to give up some things to prioritize your time with your new child. Taking on too much will lead to less sleep and that in turn can snowball into other issues you will want to avoid within your family, career and overall life.Set boundaries.fahl Orlove, the CEO and founder of Orlove Entertainment started his company right after his first child, Kennedy was born 4 years ago. He couldnt afford to take any time away from work - and was back in the office the very next day. Even so, hes made a conscious effort to set as many boundaries as he can, ensuring hes there for his now family of five. Over the past four years, I have worked very hard to make sure all of my free time is spent with the family, making a strong effort to be home every day at 630pm to be with them for bedtime and on weekends, when I am not at events, he shares.Love your children - but dont forget your partner. If youre in a relationship when you decide to have children, the meaning of love dramatically shifts. Date nights become less frequent - as does sex - and your discussions and arguments will take a new form. It is a taxing time for any twosome, no matter how solid you are together. But the CEO and founder of Clearwater and father of four girls, Andy Latimer reminds new dads, you should love your kids unconditionally - but also remember your wife just had a baby and has a crazy new emotional connection. Dont think that she doesnt love you any more or isnt connected to you anymore because shes paying attention to the baby. Dont get jealous. All that attention that she was giving to you shes now giving to the baby, he shares. You will become more efficient.Ever have one of those days where you had one-too-many brews last night so you didnt sleep well, and now youre sitting at your desk, wondering how youre going to last eight hours? Now, think about doing that every single day for well, years. Nicholson said for his last three laps around the sun, he can count on one hand the number of times hes slept for more than three hours in a row on one hand. Though it is definitely a learning curve to adjust to, becoming a father has helped him maximize productiv ity. I had no option but to simplify work and in that become super efficient. After all, if you have a baby that sleeps for from 8 pm for only a few hours, then that is precious sleep time for me to ensure I am on form the next day, he shares. You must prepare for a new rhythm - before your child is born. Before your baby arrives, Nicholson challenges fathers-to-be to be critical of their work and life schedule and determine what is important - and what needs to change. When you execute on this process before your child is born, you will start the transition earlier and adjust at least a bit more easily. Perhaps that means looking at which meetings you attend and their purpose. How much of your day is focused on quality and how much gossip and random chit-chat goes on that isnt purposeful? he continues. It could be making sure you start with a 10 min walk at some point in the day to keep your body doing something for you. After all, as dads, we like to be providers, and we must lear n to care for ourselves even more deeply in order to be able to cherish and care for our children.Youll never be prepared for how much love you feel. And thats okay.If there is one aspect of parenthood that all mothers and fathers can agreement on, it boils down to one four-letter word Love. Perhaps Latimer says it best when he explains you dont realize you could ever love anything as much until you hold your child in your arms. The moment you look in that babys eyes and theyre breathing and connecting with you you realize what true love really is. Unconditional, undying love. I felt that the moment I held my first daughter Madi and I will never forget that feeling, Ive felt that with every one of my children. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Resume Length The Shorter, The Better
Resume Length The Shorter, The Better Resume Length The Shorter, The Better As an eager and experienced job candidate, it only makes sense that youâd want to convey as much relevant information about your work history, skills, and qualifications to your prospective employer. What better place to share all of this valuable insight into all of the plusses your candidacy brings to the table, than in your professional resume. Before you go and type up a 20-page mini-novella in an attempt to win the job offer, however, there are a few words of wisdom we need to pass along regarding resume length. General Guidelines The general and accepted rule of thumb when it comes to professional resumes is to keep things simple, clean and one page or under in length. Thatâs right, your entire relevant job experience needs to be condensed down onto one side of a single sheet of paper in order to be in line with common industry standards. This isnât just a case of âwe told you soâ or some arbitrary attempt to save a few trees, either. As it turns out, thereâs solid logic and science behind the short and sweet approach to your CV. Most hiring managers are professional, busy individuals with their own set of job duties that need to be accomplished daily on top of conducting the hunt for their newest employee or team member. Long resumes can cause busy readers to lose interest, potentially missing valuable information thatâs buried somewhere past the first page. A single page resume doesnât come off as all that daunting and is typically short enough to allow an interviewer to thoroughly study up on the potential candidate. The Forest for the Trees In addition to length, interest and available time, longer resumes often have a way of burying the candidateâs most critical information. A strong, well-crafted resume leads with the most impactful information that helps sell an applicant to the employer. Loading up a resume with details, wordiness and irrelevant facts makes these critical elements and qualifications difficult to spot through the myriad of pages which, in turn, lessens your chance of that all-important call-back. Exceptions to the Rule Like all good rules, the whole âone-page and one page onlyâ stricture is made to be broken. Weâre not talking about adding length for lengths sake or throwing in a dissertation about your fabulous horticultural hobbies. In some cases, however, experienced and qualified candidates may need to include a little bit of extra substance in order to show off their full potential. Highly qualified candidates at the executive or director level will often have a lengthy job history, all of which would be relevant to a prospective employer. In general, the higher the level of position the more in the way of work history and experience youâll need to include on your resume. These advanced positions may also require additional narrative, bullet points with career milestones or other details that can lengthen a resume beyond the standard page. Similarly, if youâre applying for a highly technical job or a position that requires advanced certifications or skills, you may end up tipping the scales to two or more pages of resume length. Positions in the academic or scientific setting may also fit this category. Itâs important to remember that these scenarios that call for extra length are, indeed, the exception. When in doubt, ask a trusted friend or professional colleague to weigh in on areas where you may need to trim content or adjust format. Remember that your resume isnât a sub sandwich, movie, or other scenarios where bigger is better. Keep things short, sweet and approachable for the best career results.

Tying Sales Compensation to Sales Quotas
Tying Sales Compensation to Sales Quotas Tying Sales Compensation to Sales Quotas Most salespeople are highly money-motivated. Ask a top salesperson how much money he wants to make next year and the answer will almost inevitably be âAs much as possible.â So getting your sales team to meet- and exceed- their sales quotas can be as simple as setting up the proper rewards. The Floating Compensation Plan A floating compensation plan can reward the superstar performers while lighting a fire under those salespeople who tend to miss every quota. Essentially, you peg different commission rates to different levels of achievement. To look at a specific example, lets say that your widget sales team has a sales goal of 100 widgets per month. You decide that a salesperson who sells exactly 100 widgets will get a 25 percent commission. If a sales rep sells only 80 widgets, he gets a 20 percent commission. If he sells 60 widgets, he gets a 10 percent commission, and so on. But dont forget to apply the carrot as well as the stick. Continuing with the above example, you might give a salesperson who sells 120 widgets a 30 percent commission rate. A sales rep who sells 150 widgets might get a 40 percent commission rate, etc. If your sales team has different quotas for multiple products or services, commissions structures can get more complicated, but the essential program should stay the same. If the sales teams quota is selling 75 of widget A and 25 of widget B, then structure the commissions accordingly. When the company launches a new product and wants salespeople to really push that product, you might offer a bonus commission that has higher payouts for selling that particular product. The Floating Commission Plan The âfloatingâ commission plan directly ties compensation to performance. Whats more, it does so in a way that makes fiscal sense for the company as well as the salesperson. After all, a sales rep who sells 150 percent of the quota makes the company a lot more money than one who only sells 50 percent of the quota, so the former salesperson deserves a higher percentage of the profits than the latter. Note that this compensation plan doesnt have to be pegged to the number of sales. You could alternatively tie it to revenue goals, e.g., the goal might be to sell $100,000 worth of widgets a month. This allows you to align compensation even more tightly to how much money your salespeople are generating for the company. The other significant benefit to the floating compensation plan is that your superstar salespeople will see that they are getting super-sized commissions, and theyll appreciate it. You are much more likely to hold onto these top performers if you express your appreciation by handing over extra cash every month. And the salespeople who just cant make their quotas will also be motivated to do something about it. This compensation strategy works best as a motivator if salespeople receive their bonus commissions quickly. The more closely you tie rewards to actions, the more satisfying it is to your salespeople, both consciously and unconsciously. So monthly or even weekly commissions payouts would be more effective psychologically than quarterly or annual timetables.

Half of Millennial women say money is the most stressful thing in their lives
Half of Millennial women say money is the most stressful thing in their lives Half of Millennial women say money is the most stressful thing in their lives Millennial women find money to be a far bigger stressor than men their age do. There are some clear reasons why â" women hold two-thirds of Americaâs 1.5 trillion in student debt, for starters. Now, a new survey from Novi Money found that for half women in that age group, money is their top stressor â" to the point where simply thinking about money was overwhelming.Novi Money surveyed 1,000 people ages 18-44, 648 of which were Millennials.Just over half (51.9%) of Millennial women say that money is the most stressful thing in their lives. And 55.3% say that just thinking about money is overwhelming.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Men are markedly less overcome by finances; just 43.2% say money is their biggest worry, and only 36.1% find thinking about it to be overwhelming. This difference is probably because men have more money and less reason to worry â" they have 70 % more than women saved in retirement accounts, 29% more in savings accounts, and they have a 36% higher balance in their checking accounts. There are a few reasons that women find money to be their number one stressor, according to Novi Money. One is a high amount of consumer debt such as credit card debt, auto loans, and personal loans â" the women who are highly strained over finances owe debt four times more than women who are not vexed over money. Having fewer assets tends to contribute to financial stress. The 51.9% of women who said money was the most stressful thing in their lives tended to have lower checking and savings account balances that women who were neutral or disagreed with that statement. Millennial women are less financially confident. Only half (50.5%) of Millennial women agree with the statement, âI feel confident that Iâm making the right financial decisions,â while 63.5% of Millennial men agree. âThereâs two big takeaways,â Shannon Mosier, founder and COO of Novi Money, told Ladders. Firstly, the data shows that Millennial women âdonât just make less money, they build less wealth than their male counterparts, they have less in checking, savings, and retirement. Theyâre more overwhelmed and stressed about money than men. That falls into the lack of confidence, and they feel like they donât have anybody to talk to.âMosier told Ladders that more financial education, preferably starting in high school, is needed. The problem that Millennial women face with finances is a âcompounded problem that needs to be solved through better, accessible financial education, particularly for women.âSecondly is âfiguring out how to help these people make better financial decisions,â said Mosier. Spouse Work Envy
Spouse Work Envy Spouse Work Envy How do you handle your own joblessness when your significant other is thriving?Your spouse just got a big promotion, while you havenât worked in months and are struggling to get your foot in the door for an interview. How do you feel? Happy? At least your family income is more secure. Envious that he or she has gotten something you havenât? Bitter, even, because you deserve at least as much success? This is definitely a situation they didnât include in the marriage manual⦠nor in business books. If youâre like most folks, chances are you have mixed feelings, including guilt that you have mixed feelings. After all, arenât you supposed to be rejoicing in the achievement of the one you love? Itâs easier when itâs someone whoâs not close to you - a friend or former colleague, perhaps, who meets with great success. That way, at least you donât have to fake joyfulness with your bedmate!Itâs all in your mindWhether or not you have trouble accepting the good fortune of s omeone else has most to do with we see ourselves, said Carol Dweck, a Stanford University psychology professor whose work, as she describes it, âbridges developmental psychology, social psychology and personality psychology and examines the self-conceptions people use to structure the self and guide their behavior.âAs she describes in her bookMindset, if we have a âfixed mindsetâ - a tendency to see our basic qualities such as intelligence and talent as fixed at birth - we feel threatened by the success of others because we fear it exposes our lack of ability. Conversely, when we believe intelligence and talent are things we can grow our whole lives through effort, we find lessons and inspiration from others: âIf he can do it, it proves that I can do it.âIâve written before about the studies Dweck has done to demonstrate the profound effects a growth mindset can have on increasing success at work. It can also make the difference between whether the little green monst er raises its ugly head when our loved one does well and weâre stuck on hold.Moving beyondSo what can you do if you recognize you are not feeling great about your partnerâs achievement? Here are some tips: First, tell yourself the truth about what youâre experiencing - âIâm having some mixed emotions about this.â Denying it to yourself will only mean the feelings come out sideways in actions and words. Embrace a âboth/andâ attitude. You feel envy and happiness, joy and discouragement. Human beings are complex creatures capable of varied emotional states. Share your both/and attitude with your spouse rather than faking it. After all, this is a person you see every day, so he or she probably knows anyway. We all have specialized brain cells called âmirror neuronsâ that allow us to perceive the emotions of others. When there is a disconnect between what a person is saying and what these cells are picking up, neuroscience tells us a person can smell somethingâs fishy. Remind yourself of your talents and the ways youâve succeeded in the past. These inner resources are the raw materials from which you build your future. Ask yourself what youâre learning as a result of this career setback. What qualities of mind and spirit have you developed? These too are resources you can call on anytime. People experiencing a setback do better when they remember itâs temporary. Youâre going through a bad patch, but it will be better in the future. If youâre feeling discouraged, ask your mate to help you remember it wonât go on like this forever. Find a way to succeed at something that requires only your effort and talents: run a half-marathon, take up oil painting, write a blog. The experience of success gives us energy to use in the job hunt. And who knows? It might spawn a whole new career. Embrace the challenge to grow and learn. âThe passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when itâs not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset,â Dweck wrote on her Web site. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.â

I quit mindless morning scrolling for two weeks  You should too
I quit mindless morning scrolling for two weeks â" You should too I quit mindless morning scrolling for two weeks â" You should too My dream morning routine goes like this: wake up naturally with the sun, enjoy warm water with lemon or a cup of coffee with collagen while I meditate for 20 blissful minutes, go through a ten-step skincare routine (K-Beauty style) and gleefully head off to a workout or a walk outside, all before itâs even time to get ready for the workday ahead (aka 7:30am). Sounds lovely, doesnât it?Hereâs how my morning routine actually goes: alarm goes off, and I groggily think about how Apple should offer less angry alarm tones (but all of the 20+ alarms sound angry to me when itâs 6:24 (precisely)). I turn it off, do the math on how much longer I can possibly stay in bed for (âI donât really need to put on mascara todayâ), and sift through Instagram for much longer than even my own bad math allows for. When itâs anywhere from 4-10 minutes too late, I finally get out of bed, brush my teeth, slather on some serum and moisturizer, and either run off to a workout class o r leave for work, always a little bit late.Yes, mornings are hard, and sleeping in is tempting, but I was waking up with more than enough time to achieve my dream morning routine (okay, not as gleefully and naturally as I envisioned, but stillâ¦), or at least to just be on time. So whatâs the problem? Well, I stay in bed for 20-30 minutes every morning on my phone. That might seem like not that big of a deal, but I did the math (this is more math than Iâve done since high school calculus!) - even just being on my phone for 30 minutes every day is 210 minutes in a week. Thatâs 10,920 minutes in a year.Thatâs right, I was wasting 182 hours a year that I couldâve spent doing something that made me feel productive or happy. Not to mention all the other times in the day I sit around on my phone (aka the nights I get to bed 45 minutes late because I was watching food videos on Facebook). I no longer wanted to waste time, I no longer wanted to always be rushed and late, an d I no longer wanted to always resort to my phone out of laziness. What I did: For two weeks, I was going to commit to not looking at my phone at all, until at least an hour after I woke up, and at least an hour before I wanted to go to bed.also vowed to be more mindful in general about my phone usage, and would only go on Instagram to see my notifications and check on the few favorite accounts that I feel genuinely inspire me (@theeverygirl_, duh!). Even those quick checks would be limited to a few times a day (no mindless scrolling!).Full disclosure, the only exception to these rules would be calling my boyfriend before bed (#LDRers, you get me), but absolutely no snapchatting, Facebook messaging, or Insta scrolling. Not only did I succeed in my two weeks, but Iâm still keeping up the habit.Hereâs how it changed my life:Iâm not so rushed.Sure, in the big game of life, 30 minutes is practically nothing. But 30 minutes before a long day of work? Thatâs everything. I can make sure I give enough time to my skincare, makeup, hair, and outfit as I need to feel comfortable throughout the entire day and make sure I have everything I need before I leave the house. This saves me more stress than you can possibly realize unless you know how many times I get to the end of the driveway and realize I forgot my wallet. But itâs not just morning routines that this challenge streamlined - I didnât have to be rushed any time during the day, at all. With my extra time in the morning, I could schedule out my day and lay out or prepare something I may need later like my lunch or workout clothes for evening exercise. I was not late for anything.Iâm healthier. When I wasnât starting my day with sitting around on my phone, I had the time to at least take a 20 minute walk if not a full on workout (thank you, Youtube!). Getting my body moving first thing in the morning made a huge difference on the energy I felt throughout the day, and kept me motivated to make healthy decisions, well into dinner time. I also had the time to make a delicious and nutritious breakfast (I even made yummy avocado toast one morning instead taking a smoothie on the road - phone, who!?).Iâm more confident.Iâm the first person to claim that I actually use social media for good - honest! Instagram helps me find and spread inspiration, harness my style and creativity, and learn about womanâs careers who I admire and would like to learn from. I donât think I easily compare myself to others, but, letâs be honest, whenever anyone is bombarded by pictures of people living their âbest lifeâ (aka a flawless, edited, version of their life without any of the inevitable bad stuff), it starts to shift their mind frame. Instead of starting my day by looking at (unrealistically beautiful) people traveling to amazing places, having amazing clothes, and living amazing lives, I focus on only myself and how amazing my life is. I take time to read a littl e bit from self-improvement books or do something that I know makes me happy like doing a quick yoga session or cooking breakfast. Which brings me toâ¦Iâm happier.Obviously, all of these factors make anyone happier. Being more confident, healthy, and less rushed sounds like a damn happy life, doesnât it? But beyond just filling the time with activities that make me happier, not checking my phone in the early morning or late at night has psychological benefits that are scientifically proven to change your psychology. For one, screen time gives us a constant subconscious feeling of FOMO. If the first thing we do in the morning is check notifications on our phone, it sets up the mind frame for the day of focusing on all the things we missed since yesterday. Subconsciously, this makes us already feel disconnected and behind.Checking your phone in the morning will also make it harder for you to focus throughout the rest of the day - seriously. Julie Morgenstern, author of Never Check Email in the Morning, says itâs hard go from using your frontal cortex to the other parts of your brain where strategy and relationships happen. Thatâs just science-y talk for, your mind goes all over the place when you look at Instagram, check emails, or text, right when you wake up, and your brain canât adjust as well into a focused state for the rest of the day. Not being able to focus and not being mindful causes stress, and you know what stress causes? Unhappiness. The world knows how harmful it is to stare at a screen before bed; the blue light tells your body its supposed to be awake, so its harder to get into a deeper sleep cycle (and getting enough sleep is crucial to feeling healthy and happy). If you need another reason, your mind canât relax if itâs keeping up with Instagram stories and group texts, and that can causes anxiety. What if those horrible nightmares or tossing and turning over your next day to-do list is all because social media scrolling before bed left your mind unable to relax? Thereâs a very good (scientific) possibility that thatâs exactly the reason. Now, I realize that for many people, they could not even imagine wasting as much time on their phones as I had been (damn kids, these days!), and this article about not looking at your phone for two designated hours of the day is not a life hack, it may just be, well, life. But for us millennials, a phone is like second skin. Itâs what we use to communicate, count our steps, wake us up in the morning, and put us to bed at night (thank you, Headspace app). While there are thousands of genius apps that can make you happier and healthier, we need space from our phones in order to be as happy and healthy as we can be. We should be using our phones only to add quality to our life rather than excessive scrolling, and we should not feel dependent on the little screens in our back pockets. A semi-digital detox totally changed my life and it might for yo u, too.(And I swear, I only checked Instagram once while writing this!)This article was originally posted on TheEverygirl.com.

3 Baby Steps to Finding an Online Side Gig
3 Baby Steps to Finding an Online Side Gig 3 Baby Steps to Finding an Online Side Gig While there are more legitimate online job opportunities than ever before, there are also plenty of bogus jobs, less-than-worthwhile gigs, and outright scams in this job market. was actually founded 10 years ago to help job seekers steer clear of all that junk and discover the legitimate, high-quality opportunities out there. If youre considering remote freelance or project work, youll want to figure out whether a job is worth your while before accepting. That includes both watching out for online scams and finding work that matches your career interests and pay levels. Wade into the process of finding an online side gig with these baby steps: 1. Understand the gig market in your field. At, we see all sorts of online freelance jobs, from entry-level opportunities to projects for senior-level career professionals. These listings include both temporary and ongoing projects that require anywhere from a few hours each week to 30 or more. Figure out what type of work youre looking for before you start applying, and youll have a much better sense of what to expect in terms of the amount of time youll spend on a side gig and how much youll be paid. 2. Figure out your general pay rates for both hourly and flat-rate work. First-time freelancers often feel nervous about setting their rates or talking about pay, but its a vital part of the process. Heres how to figure out your rate: Take your most recent annual salary and calculate your hourly rate from that (pre-tax). Then, increase that by anywhere from 20-30 percent to cover business expenses, tax obligations, and related costs associated with freelancing. Also, do some research to figure out what clients and employers are offering for the type of work youre looking to do. As I told NerdWallet in a recent interview about online jobs, searching the Internet, scrutinizing job ads, polling colleagues, asking LinkedIn groups for assistance, and contacting professional organizations in your industry can help in determining what the market will bear. NerdWalletâs Laura McMullen offers this great example: âSay you earned $35,000 before taxes. For this example, weâll divide that salary by 2,087 hours, which is the figure the federal government uses to determine its employeesâ hourly rates. Your hourly rate would be $16.77 ($35,000/2,087 = $16.77). Then hike up that $16.77 by 20% to 30% to account for business expenses, tax obligations and other costs related to freelancing, Reynolds says. With an additional 20%, your rate is about $20 per hour.â 3. Watch out for sophisticated job scams. Recruitment fraud happens in all sorts of ways. Red flags of job scams include: being asked for personal data up front being offered a job right away or out of the blue being asked to invest or pay for training, materials, equipment, or other work-related items being sent to a URL that does not match the real companys web address Always triple-check the URL from which youre applying to make sure its a real company, and not a fake company with a copycat website that looks similar to the real companys site. Online side gigs are increasingly common, and a great way to increase your income even if you have limited time. Know what the gig market in your field looks like, how much you can charge, and the warning signs of scams, and youâll be baby stepping into a freelance gig in no time. Start Your Job Search Today!

How to Land a Retirement Job
How to Land a Retirement Job How to Land a Retirement Job Retirement from a lifelong career doesnt necessarily mean an end to work. Many retirees return to the workforce to pursue a passion, earn extra money, gain health care benefits, serve their community, or to avoid boredom. In fact, retirement can signify the start of a new career for many workers who arent ready to actually retire. Retirement can provide an opportunity to choose a different path than the first time around. It can also provide extra income and the chance to do the type of work that you wished you could have done during your last career. Types of Retirement Work Options Some of the more common options for retirement employment are operating a small business, freelance work, hospitality, retail, consulting, teaching, and healthcare. However, dont limit yourself. Rather, before you start a job search, take some time to explore options and decide what it is you would like to do during this phase of your working life. Take a career test or two and see what might be a good fit for your skills and interests. Also, consider how much time you want to commit and plan accordingly. Many employers would prefer to hire flexible employees who are willing to work less than full-time hours. If you dont need to work 40 hours a week, it will be easier to land a job. How to Land a Retirement Job To get started, consider reaching out to contacts at your previous employers if you enjoyed working there prior to your retirement. Explore part-time roles with less stress or greater appeal that will still tap the knowledge or skills accumulated throughout your career. Or, consider some additional ideas: Make new contacts in person: Utilize your positive image and outgoing personality by contacting managers in-person at local restaurants, hotels, retail establishments, and other employers. Stop by at non-peak times, show respect for gatekeepers, and exude a youthful energy. Use temporary employment agencies: These work well for office and factory jobs. Temp agencies are a great way to access seasonal and part-time employment as well as to sample a variety of employers. Plus, temp jobs give you flexibility when you dont want to commit to a full-time position. Mobilize your contacts: Let them know what type of employment youâre seeking. You may be surprised to learn that one of your contacts or one of their associates could use help from a trusted source. If your connections dont need help, they may know someone who does. Start your own business: If you have entrepreneurial inclinations, explore the viability of starting a small business, whether it is marketing a favorite craft item, providing a service like installing hardwood floors, or catering parties. Retirees often favor enterprises which require limited capital investment. Consult business people whom you know and services such as Score or the Small Business Administration. Try freelance work: Consulting, writing, design, programming, translating, medical transcribing, and data entry are common pursuits for many seniors. Utilizing websites that match freelancers to projects can be an effective strategy. Check the Chamber of Commerce: Many local businesses list jobs on their Chamber of Commerce website. Its a good resource for finding local jobs. Visit online job posting sites: Use online job search engines to find relevant listings in your location. In addition to using the general job sites, check those that focus on jobs for retirees and older workers. Visit Encore for positions that are geared towards those looking for a passion-related job or second career, and try VolunteerMatch to research a variety of volunteer jobs to find out which ones appeal to you. Also try AARPâs Life Reimagined for Work, which not only pulls relevant job listings from LinkedIn but also offers content specific to boomers along with tools to help career changers and retirees find the right job for them. Workforce50.com is another site worth visiting because it offers useful search tools, reviews of career books, information on military-to-civilian job transitioning, and more. Working and Social Security If youâre collecting social security and are under full retirement age, earnings from your job can impact your social security benefits. Understand how working impacts your social security retirement payments. Top Jobs for Retirees Not sure what type of retirement job youâd like to pursue?
